For Emily Meeker, 2024 recipient of the Dr. Kristine Bennett Honorary Scholarship, studying abroad in Lisbon, Portugal in the Summer of 2026 was a chance to learn firsthand how

healthcare is practiced around the world.

Emily is a rising third-year Exercise Science & Kinesiology major at the University of SouthFlorida, and a student in the Judy Genshaft Honors College. She spent two weeks in Portugal through the Honors College Physician Observation Program, and during her time abroad, she shadowed physicians in Neurosurgery and Internal Medicine at two different hospitals, gaining valuable insight into the cultural influences that shape patient care.

She shared that her experience reinforced the empathy and open-mindedness that she strives to bring to her future career as a healthcare professional. After earning her bachelor’s degree, Emily plans to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and become aphysical therapist.

Looking back on her journey, Emily encourages future Peirano Family Foundation scholarship applicants to embrace every opportunity that comes their way.

“Never limit yourself. Don't hesitate to apply for opportunities or take on new experiences out of fear of failure. Growth comes from taking chances, and more often than not, those experiences will open doors to incredible new opportunities, meaningful connections, and personal growth.”

Emily also shared that receiving the Dr. Kristine Bennett Honorary Scholarship helped make opportunities like her study abroad experience possible, and she is grateful for the Peirano Family Foundation’s continued support throughout her academic journey
